Insurance: NAICOM Charges Brokers On Penetration, Infrastructure Financing
By Sunday Etuka
Insurance brokers in Nigeria must take on a more strategic role in mobilising long-term investments for infrastructure and widening insurance penetration, the Commissioner for Insurance and Chief Executive Officer of the National Insurance Commission (NAICOM), Mr. Olusegun Ayo Omosehin, has said.
Omosehin spoke at the 2026 National Insurance Brokers Conference and Exhibition, held at the Shehu Musa Yar’Adua Centre in Abuja. The event was themed “Insurance: Infrastructure Financing & National Development Agenda.”
He described brokers as key drivers of risk management, consumer protection and investment mobilisation, and said their work is central to supporting the nation’s economic growth.
The Commissioner called the Nigerian Insurance Industry Reform Act (NIIRA) 2025 a landmark legislative framework designed to strengthen the industry’s financial resilience, improve corporate governance, enhance accountability and restore public confidence in insurance institutions.
He urged brokers to uphold the highest standards of professionalism, embrace innovation and emerging digital technologies, and comply fully with regulatory requirements.
While reaffirming NAICOM’s commitment to a stronger, more transparent and customer-focused insurance sector, he encouraged brokers to form strategic partnerships across critical sectors of the economy to unlock new investment opportunities and speed up national development.
Omosehin also challenged stakeholders to go beyond dialogue by turning the outcomes of the conference into measurable actions that will boost the industry’s contribution to economic transformation.
“Let us work together to build an insurance industry that commands public trust, delivers lasting value to policyholders, and serves as a catalyst for sustainable national development,” he said.
