The Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, has directed the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) and the Distribution Companies (DisCos) to move quickly to restore normal electricity supply after outages in Lagos, Abuja, Ogun, Kwara and Oyo States.
The Federal Ministry of Power said it has noted the concerns of Nigerians in the affected areas, which had recently enjoyed noticeable improvements in supply before the current downtimes.
It acknowledged the inconvenience caused to households, businesses and public institutions, and said it understands the frustration of those who had begun to see the benefits of steadier power.
The Ministry, in a statement made available on Thursday by the Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to the Minister of Power, Adeola Adelabu, added that it recognises what every hour without electricity means for individuals, families and businesses, and does not take the situation lightly.
According to the Ministry, preliminary assessments show that the disruptions are not the result of any major or systemic failure of the national grid. They stem from maintenance and operational issues on parts of the power ecosystem, together with a decline in generation.
Gas supply constraints have affected thermal power stations, while hydroelectric stations are producing less because of lower water inflows into reservoirs.
The Ministry said all of these issues are being addressed, noting that the Minister was working closely with TCN, NISO and the DisCos, and has instructed them to resolve the operational constraints behind the downtime, speed up ongoing maintenance, and keep the public informed.
The Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to the progress already recorded and to improving the reliability and quality of electricity supply nationwide, adding that Nigerians deserve better power and that the administration is working to deliver it.
The Minister thanked the public for its patience and understanding, and said further updates will be provided as restoration progresses.
