AfDB Briefs NERC On Desert To Power Initiative, Electrician Gains

By Sunday Etuka

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has received a delegation from the African Development Bank (AfDB) on a working visit centred on electrification progress in Nigeria and prospects for closer collaboration between the two institutions.

The AfDB team, led by Mr. Chigoziri Egeruoh, used the visit to update the Commission on the Nigeria Electrification Project (NEP), pointing to key achievements recorded so far in extending power to communities that remain underserved or entirely without electricity.

Beyond the project update, the delegation introduced NERC to the bank’s Desert to Power initiative, a renewable energy programme designed to speed up the deployment of clean energy solutions across the African continent.

Discussions, according to NERC, also covered three priority areas under the partnership: mini grids, energising health, and energising education, interventions aimed at bringing reliable electricity to off-grid communities, health facilities, and schools.

Responding, NERC reaffirmed its commitment to working with development partners to widen sustainable electricity access, strengthen service delivery, and support Nigeria’s broader energy transition agenda.

Both sides also used the meeting to scope out further opportunities for cooperation on the nation’s electrification goals.

The visit was described by both institutions as a reaffirmation of their shared commitment to deepening cooperation, advancing sustainable energy solutions, and pushing towards universal access to reliable electricity in Nigeria.
