Amnesty International Condemns Kuje Council Chairman Over Threat To Expel Non APC Residents

Amnesty International has condemned the Chairman of Kuje Area Council in the Federal Capital Territory, Samuel Danjuma Shekwolo, over his threat to chase out of the area anyone who refuses to join or vote for the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The rights organisation described the chairman’s remarks, that residents who will not vote for the APC must leave Kuje, as a call to violence and a direct attack on freedom of association and personal liberty.
According to Amnesty International, no one’s right to live anywhere in Nigeria should be conditioned on joining or voting for a particular political party. The group called on the police and other security agencies to immediately halt any plan to use violence against residents over their political choices.
Amnesty International, in a post on its X handle on Tuesday,said the council chairman poses a danger to society and must be held accountable for threatening violence against those who may choose not to support the APC.
The organisation warned that any move to unleash violence on residents of Kuje who do not back the APC would have wider consequences and put lives at risk, insisting that citizens’ right to make their own political choices must be respected and upheld.
