Beautiful Beginning Academy, Abuja, has emerged winner of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Council’s 2026 Secondary Schools Media Literacy Quiz, defeating Cedar Hall Academy, Lugbe, to claim the top prize.
BBA defeated Cedar Hall Academy 8–6 in a keenly contested tiebreaker, after both schools had scored 205 points each at the end of the second round.
The competition, held on Thursday, at the NUJ FCT Council Secretariat, Utako, Abuja, brought together four secondary schools from across the FCT.
The quiz, which was designed to test students’ knowledge of journalism and media literacy, was part of the NUJ-FCT Council’s drive to revive and strengthen Press Clubs in FCT schools.
In the first round, Government Senior Secondary School (GSS) Garki scored 70 points, GSS Gwarimpa scored 80 points, while Cedar Hall Academy, Lugbe scored 95 points and Beautiful Beginning Academy scored 115 points.
At the end of the second round, GSS Garki scored 40 points, GSS Gwarimpa scored 80 points, Cedar Hall Academy scored 110 points, and Beautiful Beginning Academy scored 90 points.
Speaking at the event, the NUJ FCT Council Chairman, Comrade Grace Ike, said the quiz aimed to mentor the younger generation on how the media works and to revive press clubs in schools.
She commended the performance of all participants and urged teachers to continue organising activities for their press clubs.
“Teachers, please organise your press clubs and, once in a while, host events and invite the NUJ-FCT Council , we will come,” she said.
Ms. Ike added that the exercise will promote media literacy, mentorship, and community engagement among students in the FCT.
“The NUJ-FCT Council will continue to create opportunities that empower young people and promote educational and media-related activities within our schools,” she said.
Earlier, Yahaya Ndambabo, coordinator of press clubs and Vice Chairman of the NUJ, said the programme reflects the council’s commitment to promoting journalism, media literacy, intellectual development, and responsible communication among young people.
“The NUJ-FCT Council remains passionate about strengthening press clubs in our schools,” he said. “Through these clubs, students are encouraged to develop critical thinking, communication skills, confidence, leadership qualities, and an interest in journalism and public affairs.”
Representatives from the Secondary Education Board among other teachers were present at the event.
Students who spoke after the competition described the exercise as a welcome development and the first of its kind.
The high point of the event was the presentation of awards and cash prizes to the winners by the Council Chairman, Comrade Grace Ike.
