Customs Investigating Alleged Misconduct Of Officer

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) says it is diligently investigating an incident of alleged misconduct by one of its officers at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport in Lagos.

The National Public Relations Officer of the Service, Abdullahi Maiwada made the disclosure on Tuesday in Abuja.

TheFact Daily reports that the incident, which transpired at New Terminal, within the departure hall of the airport, was captured on video by the involved passenger, and reveals an inappropriate request for ₦5000 by the officer, in exchange for expeditious processing of customs procedures.

The NCS, while confirming that the officer implicated is indeed personnel of the Service properly assigned to the Murtala Mohammed International Airport Area Command, strongly condemned the unprofessional conduct, and reiterated its dedication to upholding the highest standards of professionalism.

“A comprehensive investigation is underway to scrutinize the incident thoroughly, and appropriate actions will be taken”, Maiwada said, adding that, “such behavior is entirely inconsistent with the core values of our Service, and we are resolute in maintaining a transparent and accountable customs operation”.

The Service further urged passengers and the public to report any instances of misconduct or corruption promptly, as “these reports are crucial in upholding the integrity of our service and ensuring that officers adhere to the highest ethical standards”.

The NCS assured that the outcome of the investigation will be made public at the earliest opportunity.
