Effurun Killing: IGP Orders Dismissal, Prosecution Of Officers

By Anne Osemekeh, Abuja

In a decisive move signaling zero tolerance for abuse of power within its ranks, the Nigeria Police Force has ordered the dismissal and prosecution of officers involved in the fatal shooting of Mr. Mene Ogidi in Effurun, Delta State.

The directive follows an earlier order by the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, who mandated the immediate withdrawal of all officers linked to the April 26, 2026 incident from the Delta State Command to Force Headquarters, Abuja, where they underwent expedited disciplinary proceedings.

TheFact Daily recalls that the killing sparked widespread outrage after a viral video surfaced online, clearly capturing the moment Mr. Ogidi was shot at close range by police personnel. The footage triggered public condemnation and renewed concerns over extrajudicial actions and the misuse of force by law enforcement officers.

Following a thorough review, the Force Disciplinary Committee (FDC) found that the principal officer, ASP Nuhu Usman, acted in gross violation of Force Order 237 and other regulations governing the use of firearms. The committee described his conduct as unlawful, unprofessional, and a stark betrayal of the duty to protect life.

Based on these findings, the FDC recommended the immediate dismissal of ASP Usman and other culpable officers. The IGP has approved the recommendation and forwarded it to the Police Service Commission for ratification in line with due process. Upon completion, the officers will be handed over for prosecution.

Reaffirming the Force’s stance, the IGP stressed that no officer has the right to take life outside the law, warning that any breach will attract the full weight of disciplinary and legal consequences.

He also extended condolences to the family of the deceased, assuring them that justice will be pursued transparently to restore public trust and uphold accountability.

The Police urged members of the public to remain calm and law-abiding, reiterating its commitment to professionalism, discipline, and the protection of citizens’ rights.
