The Enugu State Police Command has arrested a 30-year-old man, Okpara Chibuike Emmanuel, for allegedly murdering his girlfriend and concealing her remains in the toilet of his apartment in the Olympic Layout area of Enugu.
Police spokesman SP Daniel Ndukwe stated on Tuesday, that the suspect was rescued from an angry mob and re-arrested by officers of the Awkunanaw Division on September 21 after reports that he had allegedly killed his girlfriend, identified only as Chinyere.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect allegedly killed the victim on September 19, wrapped her body in nylon and hid it inside the apartment’s toilet. Neighbours reportedly discovered the crime after a foul odour from the decomposing remains drew attention, prompting them to force open the apartment and apprehend the suspect before police arrived.
The command said the victim’s remains have been deposited in a mortuary for autopsy, while efforts are ongoing to identify and contact her relatives.
According to police, the suspect confessed during interrogation, claiming the incident followed an argument over allegations of HIV infection. He allegedly admitted striking the deceased on the head with a pestle, resulting in her death.
Commissioner of Police Mamman Bitrus Giwa has directed the State Criminal Investigation Department to conduct a thorough investigation and ensure the suspect is prosecuted upon conclusion of the case.
