IGP Disbands Police Team For Misconduct In Edo

The Acting Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun, has disbanded a team of police officers attached to the Edo State Police Command, who were responsible for running over a citizen at Ekpoma.

The Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, in a statement on Thursday, said the move underscores the commitment of the IGP to hold officers accountable for their actions which will never be tolerated in the Nigeria Police Force.

On Thursday, 29 June, 2023, a video which went viral, showed a man lying on the ground in handcuffs while a Sienna bus, occupied by police officers, intentionally ran over him. The victim’s ‘offence’ was his refusal to allow the team access to his mobile phones.The victim was said to have sustained multiple bruises on his body and was taken to the hospital for medical attention.

Adejobi said the erring policemen who had been in detention in Edo State are to report to the Force Headquarters on Monday for further action.

He called for calm, assuring residents of Ekpoma that the police authorities will not condone such an act of unprofessionalism and illegality.
