IGP Proposes 200% Gratuity For Retired Police Officers

By Sunday Etuka

A proposal to give retired police officers a gratuity of 200 per cent of their entitlement, alongside better pensions, is now being reviewed by a Presidential committee, following a push by Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu.

According to a statement by the force, the committee includes key financial and pension institutions and is looking for sustainable ways to resolve the long-standing problems around police retirement benefits.

The proposed package would link pensions to officers’ last salaries, deal with outstanding liabilities and possibly review the entitlements of personnel who have already retired.

The reforms also aim to tackle discontent over the Contributory Pension Scheme and to improve how benefits are administered and paid on time.

The Federal Government has reportedly cleared pension payment backlogs and raised payments for some beneficiaries. Even so, retired officers continue to press for a more sustainable system that can support them after years of service.

The proposal is not yet an approved entitlement. Its implementation will depend on the committee’s recommendations, government approval, funding arrangements and final guidelines.
