Kano: FG Commissions Four New Power Substations, Adds 544MW To National Grid

By Sunday Etuka

Four new transmission substations have been commissioned in Kano State, adding 544MW of wheeling capacity to the state and the national grid, following a partnership between the Federal Ministry of Power, the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) and the Kano State Government.

The substations are located at Walalambe, Kumbotso, Dakata and Dan-Agundi. Walalambe gets a new 80MW substation fitted with two 40MVA transformers. Kumbotso receives 300MVA at the 330kV level, along with 100MVA transformers.

The Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to the Minister of Power, Adeola Labzy, disclosed in a statement on Thursday that Dakata and Dan-Agundi each gain an additional 100MVA transformer at the 132kV level.

According to the ministry, the projects will strengthen bulk electricity supply to Kano’s industrial, commercial and residential areas, relieve overloaded substations and create room to serve demand that had previously been suppressed.

At Walalambe, six outgoing feeders will support supply to the Tokarawa Industrial Area, the Eastern Bypass, Maiduguri Road, Hadejia Road and neighbouring communities. Lee Group, a major industrial enterprise, has been reconnected to the grid after more than 30 years of operating off-grid.

The fire-damaged Dan-Agundi substation has also regained substantial capacity to serve Kano’s ancient city, the Emir’s Palace and surrounding communities.

The ministry said the investments provide stronger infrastructure for manufacturing, small businesses, employment and improved household welfare.

It described the projects as a testament to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda and his determination to reset the power sector as a foundation for national development, turning infrastructure investment into economic opportunity across the country.
