LG Donates Solar-Powered Borehole To Ondo Community

By Sunday Etuka

LG Electronics has commissioned its 21st solar powered borehole at Osan Agba, Oke Oka Akoko, in Ondo State, extending its community water programme to another part of Nigeria.

The facility runs on solar energy and operates independently of the national grid.

For residents, that means less time spent searching for water, more convenience at home, better hygiene and a dependable supply for the wider community.

The project also shows how the company’s approach to corporate citizenship has changed.

LG has moved from one off interventions to a growing network of sustainable infrastructure built around needs identified in each community.

At the commissioning, the Chairman of Akoko South West Local Government, Hon. Ayọ Ajana, said the project shows what private sector and community collaboration can achieve.

He described it as support for the work of the government and urged residents to take ownership of the facility and protect it for future generations.

Hon. Ologunbaba Ruben (Ṣóyọ), the Adedibu of Osan Àgbà Oka, said the borehole means far more than a ceremony. Families and children will use the water daily, he said, so the whole community must help preserve it.

He also thanked LG for looking beyond major cities to communities like his.

Chief Darusa Adedibu, the Olugbedere of Igbedere, Osan Àgbà Oka, said development is only meaningful when it reaches people where they live.

He noted that clean water affects health, hygiene and general wellbeing, and said the community now has a duty to ensure the borehole keeps serving everyone.

The Chairman of Udẹ̀ Osan Àgbà Oka, Hon. Ajulo Tayo, said some projects are merely heard about while others are felt every day, and water belongs in the second group.

He said the community’s gratitude must be matched by good care of the facility and fair sharing of its benefits.

The Oke Oka Akoko borehole follows LG’s 20th installation in Nariya Rigasa, Kaduna State. The programme uses sustainable technology to meet a basic human need while reducing reliance on grid electricity.

Speaking on behalf of the Managing Director of LG Electronics Nigeria, Mr. Hyoung Sub Ji, the General Manager for Media Entertainment Solutions in the TV Department, Mr. Choongbae Seok, said the milestone matters because of the people behind the number.

He said innovation is most valuable when people can feel its impact, whether through technology in their homes or through resources applied to a basic need like clean water.

Seok added that sustainability was built into the solar powered model from the start. The company, he said, is not interested in infrastructure that works only on commissioning day, but in something practical that keeps serving the community for years.

The initiative also stresses community participation and stewardship, since infrastructure lasts longest when the people it serves have a stake in maintaining it.

A borehole can be commissioned in a day, but its true value is measured in the years that follow. With each new project, LG’s growing clean water footprint is turning individual CSR efforts into a wider model of community investment, where technology, sustainability and local participation meet.
