The Nigerian Navy has rescued three passengers from a boat that capsized along the Bennett River in Warri, Delta State, averting what could have been a tragic maritime accident.
According to the Navy on Monday, the rescue operation was carried out by personnel of Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) DELTA during a routine maritime security patrol aimed at ensuring safety and security on the nation’s inland waterways.
Authorities said the patrol team spotted distressed passengers and floating debris from the overturned boat, signalling an emergency situation. The personnel immediately launched a search and rescue operation, successfully recovering all three victims and salvaging valuable items from the wreckage.
Preliminary investigations indicated that the boat capsized after encountering rough waves and severe weather conditions triggered by a heavy rainstorm.
The rescued passengers were evacuated to the NNS DELTA Sick Bay, where they received prompt medical attention before being discharged after their condition was stabilized.
The incident highlights the Nigerian Navy’s critical role not only in maritime security but also in emergency response operations across the country’s waterways. It further underscores the importance of sustained naval patrols in enhancing safety, protecting lives and providing rapid assistance to waterway users in distress.
The Nigerian Navy reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining a safe and secure maritime environment while supporting lawful activities across Nigeria’s waterways and coastal communities.
