NERC Applauded On Mini Grid Regulations, Net Billing Initiative

The Renewable Energy Association of Nigeria (REAN) has commended the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) for the Mini-Grid Regulations 2026 and the draft net-billing framework for renewable expansion in the country.

REAN President, Ayo Ademilua, gave the commendation when he led a delegation to the NERC Headquarters in Abuja.

He was received by the NERC Commissioner for Research and Data Analytics, Dr Fouad Animashaun.

Key highpoints from the meeting between REAN and NERC, according to a statement posted on X by the Commission, include: Policy Commendation, – Increased Thresholds, Regulatory Support, and clarification of NERC Mandate.

During the meeting,REAN commended NERC for the Mini-Grid Regulations 2026 and the draft net-billing framework, identifying them as crucial drivers for expanding renewable energy access in Nigeria.

The meeting also focused on the major highlight of the updated regulations, the increase of the mini-grid development threshold to 5 megawatts (MW) and above, which is expected to boost investment and allow for larger-scale projects.

REAN praised NERC for its transparency and efficiency in processing mini-grid permit applications, making it easier for developers to operate.

NERC, during the meeting emphasized that its role is not to execute projects directly, but to create an enabling, well-regulated environment that supports private sector growth and expands grid access.

The apex electricity regulator in Nigeria assured REAN of sustained partnership, specifically focusing on capacity building and stakeholder engagement that will accelerate the growth of Nigeria’s renewable energy sector.
