Nigeria, Türkiye Explore Gains Of President Tinubu’s Visit

According to a statement issued by the Spokesperson, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kimiebi Ebienfa on Thursday, the visit was to build on gains made during President Bola Tinubu’s visit to Ankara,Türkiye in January.

The Turkish Ambassador, in his remarks, appreciated the excellent coordination from the Nigerian side to make the state visit a success.

He buttressed the fact that the visit by the Nigerian President to Ankara, had deepened relations between both countries as strategic partners and looked forward to the implementation of the decisions reached by the leaders of both countries.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, in his response, affirmed that the state visit was historic as anticipated and had created a new chapter in Nigeria and Türkiye relations.

Speaking further, the Minister commended the signing of nine landmark agreements during the state visit for the benefit of the government and people of both countries. The Minister of Foreign Affairs also used the opportunity to call for collaboration in the area of training opportunities, especially the strong partnership between the Nigerian Foreign Service Academy in Ijanikin, Lagos and the Turkish Diplomatic Institute.

Discussions during the meeting also agreed on channels of communication and further engagements for necessary follow-up mechanisms and plans to hold a Political Consultative Meeting later in the year to achieve targeted results.

On 27 January 2026, President of Nigeria Bola Tinubu was officially welcomed by Turkish President Recep Erdoğan at the Presidential Complex in Ankara.

In the presence of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and President of Nigeria Bola Ahmed Tinubu, a total of nine agreements were signed between the two countries.

The signed agreements included:

“Agreement on Cooperation in Diaspora Policy between the Presidency of Turks Abroad and Related Communities of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of the Republic of Türkiye and the Commission for Nigerians in the Diaspora.

“Agreement on Cooperation in Media and Communication between the Government of the Republic of Türkiye and the Government of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

“Agreement on Cooperation in Higher Education between the Republic of Türkiye and the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

“Agreement on Halal Quality Infrastructure between the Halal Accreditation Authority of the Republic of Türkiye and the Nigerian National Accreditation System.

“Joint Declaration establishing the Joint Economic and Trade Commission (JETCO).

“Protocol on Military Cooperation between the Government of the Republic of Türkiye and the Government of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

“Agreement on Cooperation in Education between the Government of the Republic of Türkiye and the Government of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

“Agreement on Cooperation between the Diplomatic Academy of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Türkiye and the Federal Republic of Nigeria Diplomatic Academy.

“Agreement on Cooperation between the Ministry of Family and Social Services of the Republic of Türkiye and the Ministry of Women Affairs of Nigeria”.
