Reactions have continued to trail the announcement of a new identification card by the National identity Management Commission (NIMC) on Saturday.

According to a statement issued by the Head, Corporate Communications of NIMC, Kayode Adegoke on Friday, April 5, 2024, the new Identification (ID) card was a collaboration with the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and the Nigeria Inter-bank Settlement System (NIBSS) to
be powered by AfriGO.

Adegoke hinted that the new card would have payment functionality for all types of social and financial services.

Some reactions from Twitter users:

@MeetSunshineMay wrote: “We have NIN & Voters card, what stops the federal government from integrating whatever new technology they have from those? There’s ATM cards that contains enough information of more than 65% of our population, you can work with banks and it will be easier and smoother to navigate. Putting Nigerians through another round of stress is unnecessary. This smells like a well packaged fraud as usual. We are not kids anymore”.

@aneke65 wrote: “BVN captured all our datas, NIN remains an avenue created to steal from Nigerians”.

@Nwafresh wrote: “I don’t know how they intend doing it but I’m not going to queue for this. Never”.

@PaultwinOkoye wrote: “Does ppl in Nigeria know that there’s absolutely no plan for this for Nigerians in diaspora? Infact most Nigerians in diaspora can’t even renew passports in our embassy, to get your NIN ,you have to travel back to Nigeria even if there’s an embassy in the country you reside , what’s my point ,we actually can’t afford all these stupid ID’s, you haven’t even finished with NIN and you’re already rolling out another stupid one ,do important things like fixing electricity supply and fixing roads b4 all thus nonsense IDs”.

@mikeoriv wrote: “Let the process of getting it be easy I can’t go through that NiN stress at all”.
