NiMet Warns Of Flash Flood Risk In 19 States

By Stella Enenche, Abuja

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has alerted residents in 19 states to the possibility of flash flooding as the 2026 rainy season gradually sets in across the country.

In an advisory issued on Thursday, NiMet said the anticipated flooding could occur during periods of intense early rainfall due to dry and hardened soils that currently have low water absorption capacity.

According to the agency, the affected states are Zamfara, Nasarawa, Kwara, Oyo, Lagos, Ogun, Ekiti, Delta, Imo, Anambra, Enugu, Ebonyi, Akwa Ibom, Cross River, Rivers, Edo, Ondo and Bayelsa.

NiMet explained that the prevailing soil conditions in many areas could lead to increased surface runoff, thereby heightening the risk of flash floods.

The agency warned that the floods may result in submerged roads, traffic disruption, destruction of homes and farmlands, as well as damage to critical infrastructure.

It also noted that blocked drainage systems, power outages, telecommunication disruptions and increased cases of water- and vector-borne diseases could arise from the flooding incidents.

NiMet urged residents and relevant stakeholders to take proactive measures to minimise risks and protect lives and property.

The agency advised communities to clear blocked drainages, stay updated with weather forecasts and flood alerts, and avoid driving or walking through flooded areas.

It further called on emergency response agencies and other stakeholders to strengthen coordination and preparedness efforts ahead of heavy rainfall events.

“Early preparedness remains key to reducing flood-related risks and impacts.
An informed community is a prepared community. Know the risks and act early,” NiMet said.
