The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has arrested several suspects and seized illegal enrolment equipment in an enforcement operation in Gwagwalada and other locations, as it steps up its fight against unauthorised National Identification Number (NIN) enrolment, illegal data modification and extortion.
In a statement signed by its Head of Corporate Communications, Kayode Adegoke, the Commission said the operation was carried out by its Inspectorate Compliance and Enforcement Unit (ICEU).
It said the move reflects its determination to end unauthorised enrolment activities and unethical practices, and to protect the integrity, security and credibility of the National Identity Management System.
NIMC noted that many of the problems people face with their NIN come from bypassing official enrolment procedures.
It stressed that NIN enrolment can only be done at the Commission’s approved centres, while modification of data can be done through its self-service portal at selfservicemodification.nimc.gov.ng.
The Commission also advised NIN holders to download the NINAuth application from the iOS App Store or the Android Play Store.
According to it, the app helps protect their NIN, allows them to print the NIN slip and offers other security benefits.
The Director-General and CEO of NIMC, Engr. Abisoye Coker-Odusote, restated the Commission’s zero tolerance for extortion and unethical conduct.
She said NIMC is committed to providing seamless, hitch-free NIN enrolment for Nigerians and legal residents.
NIMC urged all NIN applicants and holders to use only approved channels for enrolment and related services. For accurate information, the public can visit www.nimc.gov.ng or follow the Commission’s verified social media handles. The toll-free line is 0800 0616 462.
