NIS Raises Alarm Over Rising Fake Migration Schemes Targeting Nigerians
By Anne Osemekeh, Abuja
The Nigeria Immigration Service has raised concern over the increasing activities of fraudulent migration networks deceiving Nigerians with false promises of jobs, education, and better living conditions abroad.
In a public alert issued on Monday, the Service Public Relations Officer, DCI AS Akinlabi, warned that many unsuspecting victims, particularly young people, are being lured into irregular migration arrangements that often lead to forced labour, human trafficking, and other forms of exploitation.
The Service stressed that no legitimate travel process bypasses official immigration procedures or approved border posts, cautioning Nigerians against attempts to travel without valid documents.
According to the NIS, all international travel must be undertaken with valid passports, visas where necessary, and other approved immigration documents, noting that the use of unauthorised border routes violates Nigerian law.
The agency urged Nigerians to verify travel and recruitment offers through official channels and avoid dealing with unregistered agents promoting illegal migration.
It also called on members of the public to report suspicious migration-related activities to the nearest Immigration Service office or relevant security agencies.
Reaffirming its commitment to border security, the NIS said it remains resolute in protecting citizens from exploitation and dismantling illegal migration networks.
