The Managing Director/CEO of the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO), Engr. Abdu Bello Mohammed, has proposed a technical working group that brings the operator and state stakeholders together to build a unified electricity market in the country.

Mohammed made the proposal on Thursday, in a presentation at the National Workshop on the Electricity Act 2023, held at the State House Auditorium, Presidential Villa, Abuja.

He said the group would deepen collaboration and help deliver an integrated electricity market in line with the Electricity Act 2023.

According to a statement made available by the Operator, Mohammed also suggested an annual energy planning summit where NISO and the states would review available energy resources and project future electricity demand.

He underscored the need for harmonized technical standards, shared data and strong coordination between state electricity markets and the interconnected national grid.

Among his other recommendations were a national state coordination framework, institutionalized integrated planning and a phased implementation roadmap.

Mohammed clarified that the aim is not to centralise electricity markets, but to make sure they operate together effectively within a reliable and well-managed power system.
