The Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) has directed all retail outlet operators to carry out immediate calibration and verification of their dispensers and totalizers, following reports of under-dispensing of petroleum products at outlets across the country.
In a Circular on Tuesday, the Authority described the practice as a serious breach of consumer trust that would not be tolerated, stressing that the directive was meant to guarantee accurate measurement and ensure consumers receive full value for the fuel they pay for.
NMDPRA said it has intensified inspections and enforcement activities nationwide, warning that outlets found under-dispensing, operating with improperly calibrated equipment, or otherwise compromising dispensing accuracy would be required to take immediate corrective action.
It added that persistent or serious violations would attract appropriate sanctions, up to and including revocation of the affected outlet’s licence, in line with its regulations.
The Authority called on the Major Energy Marketers Association of Nigeria (MEMAN), the Depot and Petroleum Products Marketers Association of Nigeria (DAPPMAN), the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN) and the Petroleum Products Retail Outlets Owners Association of Nigeria (PETROAN) to promptly notify their members of the directive and support full compliance across the industry.
NMDPRA reaffirmed its commitment to protecting consumers, promoting transparency, and upholding the integrity of petroleum product transactions nationwide.
