The Edo State Police Command has launched an investigation into a deadly shooting incident that occurred on Saturday around the University of Benin axis in Benin City.
The State Command’s spokesperson, ASP Eno Ikoedem, made this known on Monday.
It was gathered that the victims — Onwuke Blessed, Alexander Omogiate, and Chinenye Christian Mbagwu — were driving out of the University of Benin when occupants of a white Mercedes-Benz GLK intercepted their vehicle near the institution’s main gate at Ugbowo and opened fire before fleeing the scene.
The attack left all three occupants with gunshot injuries, while a female passerby identified as Dorathy Ubah was also hit by stray bullets.
Ikoedem said operatives responded swiftly and rushed the victims to the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) for treatment. However, Alexander Omogiate was confirmed dead by doctors, while the other victims are said to be responding to treatment.
Commissioner of Police, CP Monday Agbonika, has ordered a full-scale investigation aimed at tracking down the assailants and bringing them to justice.
The command warned criminal elements operating in the state, particularly around university campuses, to desist from violent activities, assuring residents that efforts are ongoing to curb crime and ensure public safety.
Police also appealed to members of the public with useful information to assist ongoing investigations by reporting to the nearest police station or through the command’s emergency lines.
