Troops of Operation HADIN KAI, working alongside personnel of the Nigeria Police Mobile Force (MOPOL), have foiled an attempted mass abduction by suspected ISWAP terrorists at the Federal Government Girls College (FGGC), Monguno, Borno State.
Disclosing this in a statement, OPHK’s Acting Military Information Officer, Captain Mohammed Goni, said the attempted attack occurred at about 1:30 a.m. on Sunday at the school, which is currently serving as temporary hostel accommodation for students of the Federal Polytechnic, Monguno. According to the military, the terrorists allegedly gained access to the facility with the help of suspected collaborators in a bid to abduct the students.
Security personnel on duty swiftly engaged the attackers, while the Sector 3 Quick Reaction Force reinforced the school. Faced with superior firepower and coordinated resistance from troops and police personnel, the terrorists abandoned the operation and fled without abducting any student. Parts of the school infrastructure were damaged during the exchange of gunfire.
Following the operation, troops rescued and evacuated all 46 students to Kinnasara Barracks in Monguno, where they received medical attention. The military confirmed that all rescued students were medically stable. However, it disclosed that some students were tragically killed after being struck by sporadic gunfire from the fleeing terrorists during the firefight.
Operation HADIN KAI expressed condolences to the families of the deceased and assured residents that security forces remain committed to protecting lives, educational institutions and other critical infrastructure across the North-East. It added that efforts were underway to identify and arrest suspected collaborators, while troops and other security agencies continue to pursue the fleeing terrorists.
