PLASERC Visits NERC, Seeks Technical, Institutional Support

The Plateau State Electricity Regulatory Commission (PLASERC) has sought the support of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) for the effective regulation of the electricity market in the state.

NERC, in March this year (2025) issued an order to transfer regulatory oversight of the electricity market in Plateau State from the Commission to PLASERC.

This was in compliance with the amended Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (CFRN) and the Electricity Act 2023 as Amended.

The transfers envisaged by the NERC order would be completed by 12th September 2025. Therefore, the visit was part of its engagement efforts ahead of the commencement of the regulatory operations in Plateau State.

According to NERC, the courtesy visit was led by PLASERC’s Chairman, Ambassador Bagudu Hirse, alongside the Managing Director, Kanneng Gwom.

Ambassador Hirse stated that the visit aimed to foster collaboration with NERC to support PLASERC’s mandate in regulating the electricity market within the State.

In her remarks, Gwom, emphasized the importance of technical and institutional support from the federal regulator to enable PLASERC to carry out its responsibilities effectively.

Welcoming the delegation, NERC Vice Chairman, Dr. Musiliu Oseni, affirmed NERC’s readiness to provide technical and advisory assistance to PLASERC upon request.

Also speaking, NERC Commissioner for Legal, Licensing and Compliance, Mr. Dafe Akpeneye, and NERC Commissioner for Research and Data Analytics, Dr. Yusuf Ali, reiterated NERC’s commitment to supporting State Electricity Regulatory Commissions (SERCs), noting that such partnerships are vital to the growth and development of the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI).
