President Bola Tinubu has announced plans to train 5,000 young Nigerians as meter installers and technicians under a new scheme known as The Power Force, as part of efforts to close the country’s metering gap and create jobs for young people.
The initiative, according to the President, falls under the Presidential Metering Initiative (PMI), which he established to end estimated billing, protect consumers, and strengthen the electricity market.
“Jobs for our young people remain central to our Renewed Hope Agenda,” President Tinubu said, describing the programme as one centred on jobs, skills, and dignity. He said it would equip young Nigerians with practical technical skills and connect them to real work in a sector that touches every home, business, and community in the country.
The opportunity would be open to eligible Nigerians who have completed their Secondary School education, with a dedicated quota reserved for members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).
President Tinubu, in a statement posted on his X handle on Thursday, explained that metering is central to making power more accessible to Nigerians.
He noted that when homes and businesses are properly metered, consumers can pay for what they actually use, while electricity distribution companies are able to collect revenues more transparently and fairly, reduce losses, maintain infrastructure, expand connections, and invest in better service.
“This is how we build a power sector that is fairer to consumers, stronger for investors, and better able to deliver reliable electricity to the Nigerian people,” he said.
The President disclosed that he has directed PMI to work closely with the Federal Ministry of Youth Development, the National Power Training Institute (NAPTIN), and other relevant stakeholders to commence the programme within the next 30 days.
He encouraged eligible young Nigerians to apply, urging them to join “The Power Force, learn a skill, earn with dignity, and be part of efforts to end estimated billing and light up Nigeria.
