A transmission tower along the 330kV Kainji to Birnin Kebbi line collapsed after heavy winds and rainstorms battered the area, prompting the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) to declare a Force Majeure Event on the corridor.
The line first tripped at 10:44 p.m. on Monday, September 7, 2026. TCN attempted a trial reclosure at 11:07 p.m., but the line tripped a second time.
Linesmen from TCN’s Birnin Kebbi Sub-Region then carried out a fault-finding patrol along the corridor and, on September 8, discovered that Tower T367 had collapsed.
According to a statement by TCN on Tuesday, preliminary findings point to heavy winds and rainstorms as the cause.
The collapse disrupted bulk electricity transmission through the 330kV Kainji–Birnin Kebbi corridor. Given the natural disaster responsible for the damage, TCN has formally declared Force Majeure on the line (2KNJ–BRK1).
The company said it has begun mobilising personnel, equipment and other resources to the site to rehabilitate the fallen tower and restore the line as quickly as possible.
In the meantime, TCN has kept power flowing to Sokoto by rerouting supply through the Talata Mafara–Sokoto corridor, drawing from an alternative path via the Kaduna-Mando axis and the 132kV Zaria–Funtua–Gusau line.
TCN apologised for the inconvenience to electricity consumers and other stakeholders, and pledged to restore normal transmission service as soon as possible.
