Tinubu Directs Adequate Security For Restoration Of Power In Northern Nigeria

By Sunday Etuka, Abuja

President Bola Tinubu has directed the security agencies in the country to provide adequate security for the Engineers of the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) to work for the speedy restoration of bulk power supply in the north.

Recall that the TCN announced that the current outage affecting the Northern States was as a result of vandalism of the Shiroro-Mando transmission line-a critical infrastructure that supplies electricity to the region.

TCN said, the prevailing insecurity in the area has delayed the immediate repair necessary to restore supply to the affected states, disclosing that even the temporary measure to reroute bulk power supply through the Ugwuaji-Apir 330kV line failed, as the line recently snapped.

However, the company assured that it was working closely with the Office of the National Security Adviser (NSA) for the engineers to gain access to the vandalism site to enable them effect necessary repairs.

Meanwhile, while speaking to the State House Correspondents shortly after the Federal Executive Council (FEC) Meeting on Monday, the Minister of Power, Chief Adebayo Adelabu disclosed that “Mr. President has instructed the National Security Adviser, Chief of Defence Staff, Chief of Army Staff and Chief of Air Staff to provide adequate security for the people that will fix the transmission lines.”

Adelabu explained that “Why it has escalated to this level is because we have not been able to guarantee security of lives of those who will fix the transmission lines.”

The President’s instruction is coming after some reactions from notable Nigerians on the situation, especially, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and the Presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 generation election, Mr. Peter Obi.
