President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will address the nation on Thursday, October 1, 2026, at 7 a.m., to mark Nigeria’s 66th Independence anniversary.
The announcement was made in a statement issued on Wednesday by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.
Onanuga advised all television and radio stations, as well as other electronic media outlets, to join the network services of the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) and the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN) for the broadcast.
Nigeria gained independence from British colonial rule on October 1, 1960, and the date is marked each year as a national public holiday.
It is a longstanding tradition for the sitting president to address citizens through a nationwide broadcast on the occasion, reflecting on the state of the country and outlining the government’s plans.
Since assuming office on May 29, 2023, President Tinubu has used the anniversary to speak to Nigerians on the economy, national unity and his administration’s reform agenda.
This year’s address comes as the country continues to implement policy changes aimed at stabilising the economy and improving living conditions, and as political activity builds ahead of the 2027 general elections.
