A transformer fault at the Apo Transmission Substation in Abuja has disrupted electricity supply to parts of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has disclosed.
In a statement made available on Saturday by its General Manager, Public Affairs, Ndidi Mbah, the TCN said the incident occurred at about 12:56 a.m. on Thursday, May 22, when one of its 100MVA 133/33kV power transformers at the Apo Substation tripped on differential relay indication while on no load.
TCN said initial inspection at the site revealed oil spillage around the affected transformer. Adding that subsequent investigation by its maintenance crew traced the fault to the red and yellow phase 33kV bushings of the transformer.
TCN said work to restore full operations is actively underway. The red phase bushing has been resuscitated, while work is ongoing on the yellow phase,” the statement said.
As a temporary measure, TCN said it has directed the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) to reroute supply for customers connected to the affected transformer’s outgoing 33kV feeders through other TCN Feeders within AEDC’s franchise area, pending the completion of repairs.
Although no specific timeline was given for the completion of repairs, the company apologised to AEDC and electricity consumers affected by the outage.
“Our engineers are working assiduously to restore the transformer and sincerely apologize for the inconvenience the incident has caused AEDC and electricity customers fed from the affected feeders,” TCN said.
