Troops of Sector 1, Joint Task Force Operation WHIRL STROKE, in collaboration with the Nigeria Police Force, have foiled an attack by suspected armed herders on Azege community in Logo Local Government Area of Benue State.
The Acting Media Information Officer, Headquarters, JTF Operation WHIRL STROKE, Lt. Ahmad Zubairu Zubairu, disclosed this in a statement on Tuesday, saying the troops responded to a distress call reporting an attack on Azege Village, Tombo Council Ward, on August 10, 2026.
According to him, the troops swiftly mobilised to the area and engaged the attackers in a gun battle upon arrival, forcing the assailants to flee in disarray following the troops’ superior firepower.
The troops subsequently pursued the fleeing attackers and discovered one of the suspected armed herders killed during the encounter.
Recovered from the scene were one AK-47 rifle, a magazine loaded with 16 rounds of 7.62mm Special ammunition and a Nokia mobile phone.
The recovered items have been secured, while the remains of the deceased suspect were evacuated by the police.
The Joint Task Force said efforts were ongoing to track and apprehend other members of the group who fled the scene.
It commended the troops for their tactical resilience and praised the Nigeria Police Force for its cooperation during the operation.
The task force also urged residents to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious movements and activities in their communities to security agencies.
