US Govt Warns Citizens On Nationwide June 12 Protests

Embassy of the United States of America (USA)  in Abuja, has alerted America Citizens living in Nigeria to planned nationwide protests by several groups on June 12, Nigeria’s Democracy Day.

In a message to United States Citizens, the Embassy said police presence and response could be expected nationwide, including in Abuja where government events were scheduled to celebrate the national holiday and in Lagos where simultaneous protests were planned.

The Embassy noted that likely locations for the protests in Abuja would be at Unity Fountain (Hilton Hotel area), Wuse, Berger Roundabout, Aguiyi Ironsi Way, Airport Road, and British Circle.

In Lagos, the protests were expected in Lekki Toll Gate and Gani Fawehinmi Park.

The Embassy said calls for the protests suggested they might begin as early as 07:00 a.m..

The Embassy therefore advised United States’ citizens to avoid the areas of the demonstrations, exercise caution if unexpectedly in the vicinity of large gatherings or protests, monitor local media for updates and keep a low profile.
