The Minister of Power, Chief Joseph Tegbe has sought enhanced cooperation with the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) to safeguard the nation’s power infrastructure.
Tegbe made the request when he paid a courtesy call on the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Tunji Disu, at the Force Headquarters in Abuja, according to a statement on Wednesday by the Special Assistant to the Minister on Media and Communications, Adeola Adelabu.
The Minister, accompanied by the Permanent Secretary and other members of the Ministry’s management team, used the visit to press for stronger security measures amid ongoing reforms in the power sector.
Speaking at the meeting, Tegbe commended the performance of the Police Force under the current administration, particularly since IGP Disu’s appointment.
He identified the vandalisation of power infrastructure as a major threat to the sector and called for intensified surveillance of critical installations, alongside sustained collaboration between the Ministry and the Police.
Responding, IGP Disu thanked the Minister for the visit, describing such courtesy call as a delight to the Force. He reaffirmed the Police’s commitment to protecting critical national infrastructure, including power assets, strengthening energy security, and prosecuting vandals and other perpetrators of power-sector related crimes.
The IGP also expressed willingness to work with the Ministry’s leadership to establish a Task Force dedicated to the protection of power sector infrastructure, and assured the Minister of the Force’s full cooperation, citing the critical and attack-prone nature of the power sector assets and personnel.
The engagement forms part of the Ministry’s ongoing drive to secure the reliability of Nigeria’s power supply through stronger inter-agency collaboration, in line with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Tinubu.
