The move was announced on Thursday during a courtesy visit by the Director General of NEMA, Zubaida Umar, to the Director General of NiMet, Charles Anosike, at the NiMet headquarters in Abuja.

Mrs. Umar applauded NiMet for the timely release of the 2026 Seasonal Climate Prediction and its consistent weather forecasts, noting that the agency had recorded significant improvements under Prof. Anosike’s leadership.

She explained that the visit by the NEMA management team was aimed at strengthening collaboration between the two agencies in addressing climate-related disasters and improving emergency response systems.

The NEMA boss also underscored the importance of integrating NiMet into the NEMA Emergency Operations Centre to ensure faster coordination and more effective response to disasters across the country.

In his remarks, Prof. Anosike thanked NEMA for recognising NiMet’s role in national development and reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to inter-agency cooperation.

He described NiMet, NEMA and the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) as critical institutions working together to mitigate the impact of climate-induced disasters in Nigeria.

Prof. Anosike further advocated the development of a Nigerian Early Warning System Roadmap through a collaborative framework involving the three agencies.

He said the proposed roadmap would strengthen coordination, build trust among stakeholders and enhance the country’s capacity to respond proactively to weather and flood-related emergencies.

Both agencies later agreed to establish a joint committee that would immediately begin work on the development and implementation of the roadmap aimed at improving disaster preparedness and response nationwide.
