NDLEA Intercepts Cocaine, Opioids Hidden In Export Cartons

By Anne Osemekeh, Abuja

Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) have intercepted consignments of cocaine and opioids concealed in export cartons bound for the United Kingdom and Australia.

NDLEA’s spokesman, Femi Babafemi, disclosing this on Sunday, added that operatives also destroyed 65,000 kilograms of skunk in major raids across Delta State.

According to him, the seizures were made on Friday, May 15, at a Lagos courier facility during the inspection of outbound shipments. NDLEA officers recovered 170 grams of cocaine hidden inside the walls of a carton containing clothes destined for Australia. Another carton heading to the UK contained 200 ampoules of pentazocine injection, 1,100 capsules of tramadol, and 100 ampoules of promethazine injection.

In Delta State, operatives raided cannabis farms in Ukwuani and Ughelli North LGAs, destroying a combined 65,000kg of skunk cultivated on 26 hectares of farmland. Two suspects — Ifeanyichukwu Peter, 52, and Godwin Vincent Osadera, 30 — were arrested during follow-up operations.

In Kaduna State, NDLEA officers recovered 361kg of skunk in Zaria and arrested 42-year-old Husaini Suleiman. Operatives also intercepted 1,989 rounds of military-grade ammunition concealed in bags of garri along the Abuja-Kaduna highway. The suspect, Abdullahi Hassan, 35, and the ammunition were handed over to another security agency for further investigation.

In Abuja, a 29-year-old businessman, Ogadi Peter, was arrested in the Life Camp area for allegedly producing drug-laced cakes and cookies for parties and social events. Officers recovered 800 grams of skunk and 2.7kg of drug-infused cookies from him.

Other operations across Ogun, Taraba, Oyo, Edo, and Kano states led to additional seizures of skunk, opioids, and “skuchies,” as well as multiple arrests.

Meanwhile, NDLEA commands nationwide continued their War Against Drug Abuse (WADA) sensitisation campaigns in schools across Oyo, Niger, Lagos, Katsina, Ekiti, and Kano states.

Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of NDLEA, Mohamed Buba Marwa commended officers involved in the operations and praised commands across the country for sustaining efforts in both drug supply reduction and anti-drug awareness campaigns
