The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to advancing the stability and efficiency of the nation’s electricity grid, a statement on Sunday by the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) has disclosed.
Special Adviser to the President on Power, Mr. Lanre Babalola, was quoted to have reiterated this commitment when he led a delegation to the Corporate Headquarters of the NISO in Abuja.
The high-level engagement, which was hosted by the NISO’s Managing Director/CEO, Engr. Abdu Mohammed, provided a platform for strategic discussions touching on day-to-day operations of the national grid, the trajectory of ongoing power sector reforms, and the Federal Government’s commitment to supporting NISO in the delivery of its mandate.
Recall that the power sector has been working round the clock to fix the issue of persistent national grid collapse, which has become a national embarrassment to the country. For instance, the national grid collapsed about three (3) times in 2023. It collapsed on September 14, September 19 and December 11, respectively in 2023.
The national grid also collapsed about twelve (12) times in 2024. It collapsed on February 4, March 28, April 15, July 6, August 5, October 14, October 15, October 19, October 22, November 5, November 7, and December 11, 2024.
The sector under his watch recorded a national grid collapse about four (4) times in 2025. It collapsed on February 12, March 7, September 10, and December 29, 2025.
In 2026, the story is not any better as the grid has collapsed about two (2) times since the beginning of the year. It collapsed on January 23 and January 27, respectively. This is despite constituting a six-member Committee to advise the Federal Government on necessary solutions to make the national grid robust and reliable.
At the heart of the deliberations at the current meeting were measures to strengthen grid reliability, improve operational efficiency, enhance transparency, and entrench overall system stability across Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI).
Speaking during the visit, Mr. Babalola underscored the need for prudent resource management, enhanced operational discipline, and sustained efforts toward improving grid performance and reducing system disturbances across the NESI.
He reaffirmed NISO’s critical role in driving a more stable, resilient, and efficient power sector.
In his response, Engr. Abdu Bello Mohammed assured the delegation of NISO’s unwavering commitment to advancing grid reliability and operational excellence.
He also pledged the organisation’s full support towards achieving the shared objectives of a more robust and sustainable electricity supply industry.
