TCN Hands Over Kainji Substation Site To Mainstream Energy

By Sunday Etuka

The Management of the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has formally handed over a construction site at the Kainji Transmission Substation to Mainstream Energy Solutions Limited (MESL), operator of the Kainji Hydro Power Plant in Niger State, for the construction of two new 330kV bays that will enable an additional 220MegaWatts (MW) of electricity to be evacuated into the national grid.

The site handover, conducted on Friday, according to a statement on Sunday by the TCN’s General Manager, Public Affairs, Ndidi Mbah, covers the Kainji Switchyard Units 1G3 and 1G4 bays construction project, and will involve civil, electrical and mechanical works, as well as testing and commissioning activities.

Once completed, the bays will facilitate the evacuation of power from two new turbines-each with a 110MW generation capacity. The project is scheduled for completion by December 2026.

He also said that the project would be executed entirely by MESL at no cost to TCN.

“Its execution will enable TCN to evacuate power that will be generated by MESL’s new turbines on completion into the national grid,” he said, commending the MESL for its cooperation and investment commitment.

Responding, MESL’s Chief Technical Officer, Engr. Cleber Grisi, thanked TCN for granting site access and pledged that the project would be delivered within the agreed timeline.

Also present at the handover were the General Manager (Business Development), Engr. Robert Bodam; General Manager (Transmission) Shiroro Region, Engr. Kabiru Suleiman; Assistant General Manager (System Electrical), Engr. Ebenezer Opadare; and Principal Manager (Transmission) Kainji Work Center, Engr. Gbenga Akorede.
