The Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) says it can no longer supply electricity to its customers in Maitama and surrounding areas after its C2 Maitama Substation was invaded and taken over by land grabbers, an incident the company says has left the facility damaged and unsafe to operate.
In a public notice on Friday, AEDC said the encroachment was led by an Assistant Director of Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA), Mr. Chinedu Okoro. The power company described the substation as a critical piece of distribution infrastructure that supplies electricity to homes, commercial establishments, diplomatic missions, and government institutions in the area.
According to AEDC, essential cables and other network assets were damaged during the encroachment, leaving the site unsafe, and making it technically impossible to continue delivering power from the installation.
The company said it has already taken the matter to the authorities. “AEDC has also petitioned the relevant authorities over the activities of individuals, as the substation and its land duly belongs to AEDC,” the public notice read. “The Company expects a thorough investigation and appropriate action in accordance with the law.”
AEDC also issued a strong condemnation of the encroachment on critical national infrastructure, warning that such actions deprive communities of essential electricity supply, disrupt economic activities and compromise public interest.
On restoration timelines, the company said power would only return when the substation is secured and the damaged infrastructure is rebuilt. It added that it appreciates customers’ understanding and support as it works with the relevant authorities to resolve the situation.
