Former Governor of Anambra State, Mr. Peter Obi, has paid glowing tribute to American music icon Dolly Parton, describing her as a woman whose greatness lay not in her fame or wealth, but in the humility and compassion she carried throughout her life.
In a tribute posted on his X handle on Wednesday, Obi said Parton’s true legacy went far beyond her extraordinary musical achievements, noting that what stood out most about her was the person she remained despite decades of stardom, awards and financial success.
He recalled that Parton rose from poverty in rural Tennessee, born into a large family that had little in material wealth but was rich in love, faith, resilience and strong family values.
According to Obi, she never distanced herself from those roots, but instead wove them into both her music and her everyday life.
Obi noted that this connection to her origins was what gave her songs such enduring resonance.
He said she sang about love, heartbreak, hardship, loneliness and hope, not as a distant performer, but as someone who truly understood the struggles of ordinary people, adding that her music gave dignity to those who are often overlooked by society.
He further observed that Parton’s compassion appeared to flow naturally from her upbringing, pointing out that even at the peak of her career, she remained warm, humble and generous, especially toward children and the less privileged.
The former governor said his admiration for Parton stemmed not merely from her musical talent, but from the fact that success never made her forget where she came from.
He cited her song “Coat of Many Colors” as an example of how she transformed her humble beginnings into music that brought comfort to millions, along with a life that continues to inspire people around the world.
Obi described this enduring humility as her greatest achievement, calling it “the sound of a good heart that never forgot its roots.”
He concluded his tribute with a prayer, asking God Almighty, whom he said shaped her into such a compassionate soul, to grant her eternal rest.
