Vice President Kashim Shettima will represent President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, leading a high-level Nigerian delegation that includes Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara, Zamfara State Governor Dauda Lawal, ministers and other senior government officials.
The General Debate of the 81st UNGA will run from September 22 to 28, 2026, under the theme “Restoring trust, managing transformation: A United Nations that delivers for all.”
Shettima, in a statement on Sunday by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Communications, is scheduled to deliver Nigeria’s national statement at the debate, setting out the country’s position on major global issues affecting national development, peace and security, economic growth and international cooperation.
During the UNGA week, the Vice President will also take part in high-level meetings covering the Right to Development, climate action and other matters of strategic importance to Nigeria and Africa.
He is expected to attend the traditional reception for Heads of Delegation and hold a series of bilateral meetings with other world leaders, international organisations and development partners on the sidelines of the Assembly.
Officials say the engagements will give Nigeria a platform to advance President Tinubu’s economic diplomacy, deepen strategic partnerships and reinforce the country’s voice on reform of the global financial architecture, sustainable development, climate finance and multilateral cooperation.
Shettima is expected to return to Nigeria once his engagements in New York conclude.
