The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has won the AfriGEO Weather, Climate and Early Warning Services Award for its outstanding contribution to strengthening early warning systems and climate resilience through Earth observation.
According to the agency on Thursday, the award was presented to the Director-General,Prof. Charles Anosike, by the Director-General of the National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA), Prof. Matthew Olumide Adepoju, at the recently held 10th AfriGEO Gala Dinner in Abuja
The recognition came as African countries increasingly seek to harness Earth observation, geospatial technology and environmental intelligence to improve preparedness for climate-related disasters and other environmental threats.
The presentation formed part of activities marking the 10th AfriGEO Symposium, which attracted policymakers, scientists, development partners, private-sector stakeholders and practitioners from 33 African member states.
The symposium, held under the theme, “Earth Observations for a Resilient Africa,” focused on advancing the use of Earth observation technologies to promote sustainable development and strengthen resilience across the continent.
NiMet’s recognition highlights its role in providing weather and climate information to support early warning, evidence-based planning and climate adaptation efforts in Nigeria.
Speaking after receiving the award, Anosike said the recognition would further strengthen the agency’s resolve to improve the delivery of timely and actionable weather and climate information.
He said NiMet would continue to leverage innovation, Earth observation technologies and strategic partnerships to enhance early warning services and support national development.
According to him, access to reliable climate information remains critical to protecting lives and livelihoods and helping communities and institutions prepare for climate-related risks.
NiMet said it would sustain its efforts to provide weather and climate intelligence capable of supporting the Federal Government’s climate-resilience agenda and contributing to a safer and more informed Nigeria.
