The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) and the China Meteorological Administration (CMA) have agreed to deepen cooperation on artificial intelligence, satellite technology and early warning systems.
According to the agency on Wednesday, the agreement was reached on the sidelines of the 2026 Alliance for Hydromet Development Annual Meeting, with both agencies identifying three priority areas: joint development of China’s MAZU operational platform for Nigeria, expanded use of Fengyun satellite technology and capacity-building.
CMA Deputy Administrator, Mr Song Shanyun, said China was ready to support meteorological development in Nigeria and beyond.
Responding, NiMet Director-General, Prof. Charles Anosike, called for a memorandum of understanding tailored to Nigeria’s socioeconomic needs and meteorological requirements.
CMA also presented NiMet with two tablets equipped with the MAZU artificial intelligence agent for urban multi-hazard early warning.
Both agencies agreed to establish a regular communication mechanism to coordinate joint projects and sustain the partnership.
