A pro-Tinubu group, the Tinubu Media Volunteers (TMV), has commended the Federal Government for settling about N758 billion in pension arrears owed to 957,045 retirees, some of them outstanding since 2007.
In a statement signed by its Chairman, Chukwudi Enekwechi, and Secretary, Segun Ogedengbe, the group said the administration of President Bola Tinubu chose to clear the huge backlog it inherited and to introduce other measures to ease problems with pension payment and administration.
TMV said the payout ends decades of delayed benefits passed down from successive administrations.
“We are glad to note that in the spirit of Renewed Hope Agenda, the Tinubu administration has undertaken to offset the pension arrears of federal workers who had toiled over the years to serve the country in different capacities,” the statement said.
The group described the liquidation of the legacy arrears as a clear demonstration of statesmanship and one element of the broader institutional economic reforms of the administration.
“Definitely, a labourer deserves his wages either in or out of service,” the group said, adding that this is the only way the government can compensate workers for serving their fatherland.
TMV also commended the National Pension Commission (PenCom) for introducing the Zero Waiting Time Policy, expanding pension awareness and outreach, and involving industry stakeholders to ensure smooth implementation of the national pension policy.
