NELFUND Upgrades Student Loan System, Targets Faster Application Processing

By Alice Etuka, Abuja

The Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) is set to upgrade the implementation of its student loan scheme in order to strengthen institutional verification and reduce errors that could delay access to student loans.

The Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of NELFUND, Mr. Akintunde Sawyerr, disclosed this at a press conference in Abuja on Wednesday, October 28, 2026.

Sawyerr said the fund would introduce the upgraded Student Loan Application System Version 2.0 alongside a series of two-day regional workshops designed to prepare institutions and relevant stakeholders for the effective deployment of the platform.

The initiative, themed “NELFUND 2.0: Transforming Access, Simplifying Applications, Empowering Students,” is aimed at simplifying application procedures, improving service delivery and strengthening coordination between the fund, tertiary institutions and students.

According to him, the workshops would bring together representatives of tertiary institutions, students, regulatory bodies, NELFUND management and staff to familiarise participants with the upgraded system and its operational requirements.

He explained that the training would focus on equipping officers responsible for processing, verifying and supporting student loan applications with the practical knowledge needed to operate the platform effectively.

Sawyerr said one of the major objectives was to minimise avoidable mistakes in student applications and institutional verification, which could undermine the timely processing of loan requests.

“Through practical training and interactive sessions, participating institutions will be familiarised with the new system, its operational requirements and the procedures for handling applications, resolving technical challenges and escalating issues requiring NELFUND’s intervention,” he said.

He added that the workshops would provide opportunities for stakeholders to identify operational gaps, share experiences and develop common approaches to addressing challenges associated with the administration of the student loan scheme.

The programme is also expected to feature discussions on policy implementation, system improvements and strategies for strengthening service delivery to eligible students.

Sawyerr stressed that the successful implementation of the upgraded platform would depend not only on technological improvements but also on the preparedness of participating institutions and the competence of officers responsible for administering the scheme.

“NELFUND’s plan recognises that the successful deployment of an upgraded digital platform requires more than technological improvements. It also depends on the readiness of institutions, the competence of designated officers and the ability of students to access accurate information about the application process,” he said.

Under the proposed arrangement, heads of institutions are expected to provide executive support, while bursars and designated student loan desk officers will work to align administrative procedures with the requirements of the upgraded system.

Information technology administrators will also play a key role in ensuring technical readiness and providing the necessary support for the effective use of the platform within their respective institutions.

Students and community representatives are expected to participate in awareness activities aimed at promoting accurate information about the scheme and helping applicants understand the requirements and procedures for accessing the loans.

Sawyerr said the involvement of the different stakeholder groups would strengthen collaboration between NELFUND and participating institutions while promoting greater consistency in application processing and verification nationwide.

He added that the regional workshops would establish a coordinated framework for engaging institutions and other stakeholders across the six geopolitical zones, ensuring that participants understand their respective responsibilities in implementing the upgraded system.

The initiative is expected to support more efficient administration of the student loan scheme by improving institutional preparedness, strengthening communication and helping students navigate the application process with fewer difficulties.
