Army Reshuffles Senior Commanders, Redeploys Generals To Key Theatres

The Nigerian Army has announced a major reshuffle of its senior leadership, redeploying generals and brigadier generals to key operational, command and staff positions across the Service.

The Acting Director, Army Public Relations, Colonel Appolonia Anele, said in a post on the Army’s X handle on Wednesday that the postings, approved by the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, were designed to strengthen operational effectiveness and align leadership with Nigeria’s evolving security challenges.

Major General IA Ajose has been appointed Theatre Commander, Joint Task Force North East, Operation HADIN KAI, moving from the Army Headquarters Department of Army Operations. Major General AE Abubakar, formerly with Operation HADIN KAI, moves to the Nigerian Army Heritage and Future Centre as Dean, Faculty of Operational Research, while Major General AM Alechenu also moves to the centre from Defence Headquarters Garrison.

Other senior appointments include Major General RT Utsaha as Commander, Defence Headquarters Garrison; Major General AM Umar as Commandant, Army War College Nigeria; Major General UM Alkali as Director, Army Headquarters Department of Civil-Military Affairs; and Major General GS Muhammed as Director General, Nigerian Army Finance Corporation.

Major General JE Osifo moves from the Nigerian Army Finance Corporation to the Military Pension Board as Chairman, while Major General IE Ekpenyong becomes Director, Engineering Services, Defence Headquarters Department of Defence Logistics.

At the brigadier-general level, Brigadier General AA Bello moves to the Defence Headquarters Department of Defence Operations, while Brigadier General MS Adamu becomes Commander, newly established 8 Brigade. Brigadier General MS Sule moves to 27 Task Force Brigade as Commander, while Brigadier General I Sule becomes Commander, 6 Division Garrison.

Brigadier General E Azenda is redeployed to 2 Division Garrison as Commander, while Brigadier General AS Bugaje moves to the Land Forces Simulation Centre as Director, Administration.

The Army said the reshuffle prioritised critical operational theatres and strategic appointments to ensure that the “right leadership, experience and expertise” were deployed to deliver decisive results. Shaibu charged the newly appointed commanders to demonstrate exemplary leadership, operational innovation, professionalism and commitment to duty while upholding the Army’s constitutional mandate.

The Service said the postings were part of efforts to maintain a dynamic leadership and force-employment framework capable of improving operational outcomes, strengthening joint and inter-agency coordination, and enhancing its response to contemporary and emerging security threats.
