Dangote Petroleum Refinery processed more crude oil than it was built to handle in August 2026, averaging 736,470 barrels per day against its 700,000-barrel nameplate capacity, according to figures from the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA).
The result puts average capacity utilization at 105.21 percent, a sharp climb from 497,000 barrels per day, or 71 percent, in July. The improvement was helped by a rebound in domestic crude supply, with deliveries to the refinery rising by 16.75 percent to 683,000 barrels per day.
At that throughput, the refinery produced an average of 84.43 million litres of refined white products daily, including Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), Automotive Gas Oil (AGO, or diesel) and Aviation Turbine Kerosene (ATK). The output reinforces its role as a major supplier to Nigeria and the wider West African region.
The Dangote Group said the performance underscores the refinery’s growing contribution to Nigeria’s energy security, foreign exchange conservation and industrial growth agenda.
Domestic PMS deliveries from the refinery rose by 39 percent month-on-month to 35.87 million litres per day in August, accounting for roughly 71 percent of total domestic petrol supply. As a result, national PMS imports fell by 26 percent to 14.60 million litres per day.
The impact was even more pronounced in the diesel market. Domestic AGO deliveries averaged 12.37 million litres per day, cutting national diesel imports from 7.90 million litres per day in July to 1.30 million litres per day in August.
The company said the added supply supports critical sectors of the economy, including transportation, manufacturing, agriculture, telecommunications and power generation.
Beyond the local market, the refinery boosted Nigeria’s export profile. In August, it exported an average of 9.73 million litres of PMS daily, alongside 8.75 million litres of diesel and 21.30 million litres of aviation fuel. These volumes support Nigeria’s emergence as a net exporter of refined petroleum products and add to foreign exchange earnings.
The company said operating above nameplate capacity demonstrates the efficiency, reliability and resilience of its operations. It added that the milestone reinforces investor confidence as the refinery’s ongoing public offering continues to draw significant market attention.
