DSS Frees Ex-EFCC Chair, Bawa, After 134 Days

Executive Chairman, EFCC, Abdulrasheed Bawa

The Department of State Services (DSS) has released the embattled former Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Abdulrasheed Bawa.

Spokesperson of the Service, Peter Afunanya, said Bawa was released on Wednesday, 25th October, 2023.

TheFact Daily recalls that President Bola Tinubu had on June 14 approved the indefinite suspension of Bawa from office as the EFCC Chairman to allow for proper investigation into his conduct while in office.

This follows weighty allegations of abuse of office leveled against him by some stakeholders in the anti-corruption fight. However, since his arrest and detention, the Secret Police didn’t formally prefer any charge against him or say his specific offence.

Willie Bassey, Director of Information at the office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, had said Bawa was suspended as a result of weighty allegations of abuse of office levelled against him.

Former governor of Zamfara State and Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, had accused Bawa of demanding a $2 million bribe from him, an allegation which he denied.

‘’DSS confirms release of former EFCC chairman, Abdulrasheed Bawa, a few hours ago (today 25th October, 2023)’’, Afunanya said.
