Former Anambra State Governor and 2027 presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr Peter Obi has dismissed as false a recent report claiming he told Nigerian soldiers to reject any salary increment until after the election, describing the claim as a deliberate misrepresentation of his position on the welfare of the armed forces.
In a statement posted on X handle on Tuesday to address the controversy, Obi said the report falsely attributes a statement to him and insisted the assertion was entirely untrue.
“My profound respect for our security forces, particularly the Nigerian Army personnel who diligently serve and protect our nation under challenging conditions, is unwavering,” he said, adding that he has “consistently advocated for the adequate provision of equipment, motivation, and protection for our security personnel.”
He recalled that his concern for the welfare of troops was heightened after soldiers were killed by insurgents following a delayed rescue effort, an incident he said forced him to question how those defending the country could be left vulnerable in their time of need.
Obi pledged that if elected, the welfare, resources, safety and honour of Nigeria’s soldiers would be treated as a top priority of his administration.
“Those who ensure Nigeria’s security must never be relegated to a secondary concern,” he said. “Our soldiers are deserving of our utmost respect, unwavering support, and a government that will unequivocally stand by them.”
He further vowed that scenarios in which servicemen and women are left unprotected in the face of peril would be eradicated under his leadership.
Obi urged Nigerians to disregard the report, describing it as misleading, and reaffirmed his commitment to what he called a clear and consistent vision for a secure and prosperous Nigeria.
“The realisation of a new and secure Nigeria is indeed possible,” he said.
