The Lagos State Police Command has dismissed as misleading and untrue, reports circulating on social media alleging that armed policemen attacked residents during the ongoing demolition exercise in Oworonshoki, Lagos.
In a statement issued on Sunday by the Command’s spokesperson, SP Abimbola Adebisi, the Police described the reports as entirely false and mischievously published to misrepresent facts and mislead the public regarding the lawful conduct of officers deployed to maintain peace and order during the Lagos State Government’s urban renewal exercise.
According to the statement, the demolition exercise was being carried out by the state’s Department of Urban Development and Planning in conjunction with the Lagos State Task Force on Environmental and Special Offences, after months of due process, official notices, and compensation to affected occupants.
The Police explained that its personnel were only present to prevent any breakdown of law and order and did not engage in violence, harassment, or collaborate with hoodlums as falsely alleged.
“The role of the Police in such operations is strictly to provide security coverage for government agencies and ensure the exercise is conducted peacefully,” the statement emphasized, adding that officers were instructed to act with professionalism, civility, and respect for human rights.
The Command urged the public to disregard the false reports, verify information before sharing, and continue to cooperate with law enforcement agencies to sustain peace, development, and orderliness in Lagos State.
SP Abimbola Adebisi on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, CP Olohundare Jimoh, reiterated the Command’s commitment to upholding the rule of law and protecting lives and property.
