The Democratic Front (TDF) has welcomed a message of commendation from United States President, Donald Trump, acknowledging what it described as President Bola Tinubu’s
successful efforts in combating terrorism in Nigeria.
In a statement signed by its Chairman, Danjuma Muhammad, and Secretary, Wale Adedayo, the group said the commendation affirmed the Tinubu administration’s resolve to make Nigeria safer, noting that it came at a time when the President’s pursuit of peace and security in Nigeria and the West African subregion was at a record high.
TDF said the development also confirmed its long-held view that Trump’s earlier threat to intervene militarily in Nigeria had been driven by disinformation and propaganda from individuals it accused of working political interest groups to strain Nigeria-US relations.
The group described Trump’s commendation as evidence of President Tinubu’s diplomatic maturity in handling what it called a provocative challenge to Nigeria’s sovereignty.
The statement credited a series of diplomatic engagements initiated by Tinubu with easing tensions between the two countries, and pointed to Nigeria-US military collaboration focused on precision targeting as having significantly weakened the camps of Sahelian terrorists operating near Nigeria’s borders with Niger, Chad, Cameroon and Benin Republic.
It said the resulting successes were reflected in a reduction of security breaches nationwide, alongside improvements in the intelligence capabilities of Nigeria’s security and defence forces.
TDF further characterised Trump’s letter as validation of what it called the Tinubu’s administration’s record on tackling insecurity since taking office in May 2023, and argued that it undercut opposition politicians it accused of seeking to use insecurity as a campaign issue ahead of the 2027 elections.
The group called on Nigerians to reject attempts by the opposition to politicise the country’s security situation.
