Director Naval Information, Captain Abiodun Folorunsho, disclosed in a statement on Saturday that the Nigerian Navy, working through Forward Operating Base (FOB) FORMOSO alongside local divers and members of the Abedigbene Fishing Community, carried out the rescue.

He explained that the boat was travelling from Yenagoa to Akassa with eight persons on board when the mishap occurred. A local fisherman raised the alarm, prompting naval personnel stationed at Labrador Lagosgbene Houseboat to move quickly to the scene. They began search and rescue operations with help from local divers and community members.

According to him, besides the Commissioner, those rescued included an officer of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps and five other passengers. They were taken to the houseboat, where they were given first aid. Initial checks showed no visible injuries.

He, however, noted that one passenger, a police officer, is still missing. Search and rescue efforts to locate the officer are ongoing.

Meanwhile, he said the Commissioner and the six other survivors were taken to Yenagoa to rejoin their families.

The Navy said the operation reflects its commitment to maritime safety, the protection of lives and swift response to emergencies within its area of responsibility.

The Commanding Officer, FOB FORMOSO, praised the personnel for their quick response and professionalism, and acknowledged the valuable support of the local divers and the host community.

The rescue, he noted, underscores the importance of cooperation between security agencies and coastal communities in strengthening maritime safety and protecting lives.
